1988-1989

The story of Breakaway really begins in 1986 with the start of Rabid Lassie. Though the lineup was almost the same the band was far different with mostly light hearted lyrics. In 1988 they decided to "break away" from that image and Joey began writing more serious lyrics under the new name. They played a lot around the bay area and developed a close friendship with another local hardcore band, Unit Pride, and actually shared members at times. Tim from Unit Pride played guitar for Breakaway and Don played bass in Unit Pride for some time. Breakaway released a couple demos and then put out an amazing ep on Soulforce Records and an equally inspiring second record on Teamwork Records. Though they are often under rated I believe without a doubt this is absolutely some of the best hardcore to come out of the late 80's scene. Eat your heart out Cappo, you got nothin on Joey's jump kicks! After Breakaway, Don and Joey went on to play in Second Coming, another great bay area band.
